Effect of actidione (cycloheximide) on yeast fermentation.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Actidione, an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces griseus, is highly active against a large number of yeasts but it has no marked antibacterial activity. Of 22 species of yeasts tested by Whiffen (1948), 9 were completely inhibited by 0.17 jig drug per ml; Saccharomyces cerevisae required 10 ,ug per ml and 5 species were not inhibited by 1000 ,ug per ml. There appears to be little in the literature regarding the mechanism of action of actidione except for the interesting finding by Kerridge (1957) that in concentrations in which it inhibited growth of Saccharomyces mandshuricus (0.5 to 1 ,ug per ml), it had no effect on respiration or fermentation but it inhibited protein synthesis and deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis. In the experiments described below it was found that fermentation of S. cerevisia was inhibited by concentrations of actidione which restrict growth of this organism and that this effect on fermentation was potentiated by copper ions.

Limited Dna Synthesis in the Absence of Protein Synthesis in Physarum Polycephalum
Actidione (cycloheximide), an antibiotic inhibitor of protein synthesis, blocked the incorporation of leucine and lysine during the S phase of Physarum polycephalum. Actidione added during the early prophase period in which mitosis is blocked totally inhibited the initiation of DNA synthesis. Actidione treatment in late prophase, which permitted mitosis in the absence of protein synthesis, perm...
متن کاملFault Diagnosis in a Yeast Fermentation Bioreactor by Genetic Fuzzy System
In this paper, the fuzzy system has been used for fault detection and diagnosis of a yeast fermentation bioreactor based on measurements corrupted by noise. In one case, parameters of membership functions are selected in a conventional manner. In another case, using certainty factors between normal and faulty conditions the optimal values of these parameters have been obtained through the g...
متن کاملUse of Yeast Culture in the TMR of Dairy Holstein Cows
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae SC 47) addition in the diet of dairy cows on their rumen fermentation and milk production. Animals received a diet TMR based on good maize silage with a higher dry matter content (14 kg), 14 kg of lucerne-grass haylage, 5 kg of crushed ears of maize, 5 kg of beet pulp silage, 3 kg of crimped wheat, 2 kg...
متن کاملEffect of Whey Permeate and Yeast Extract on Metabolic Activity of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis Bb 12
In fermented products containing Bifidobacteria, factors such as organic acid concentration and b-galactosidase activity are important in the development of flavor and texture of final products. Both the process conditions and medium components have significant effects on fluctuation of such factors. The effects of whey permeate powder and yeast extract concentrations, as nitrogen sources was i...
